Indications and contraindications

Indications are specific issues going on in the body at a specific time (e.g., headaches, stress). Massage Therapists and Bodyworkers don’t diagnose disease, nor do they cure it. But with consistent work, massage and bodywork can lessen the effects of stress and disease on the body.
General indications include: relieve stress, lessen or reduce headaches, reduce edema (swelling in extremities not related to Congestive Heart Failure), strengthened immunity, improved mental function, increase of range of motion (ROM), and low back pain. Almost any disease can benefit from massage and/or bodywork.
Contraindications are issues where massage/bodywork may not be recommended or the client may need approval from a medical provider because the condition may be made worse. Contraindications include high fever, contagious disease, open wounds, drunk or high on drugs, and burns. Conditions requiring approval from primary care physician include cancer, neurological disorders (Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy, epilepsy), or extreme fatigue or age. Massage and bodywork are safe in the early stages of pregnancy but the physician should be made aware of any bodywork in later stages.
