The Department of Biotechnology is a new department established in December 2004 under the School of Life Sciences. The academic activity of the department has started in 2004-2005 session with 07 faculty members and 31 students. At present, a total of 94 students including four foreign students are conducting their studies in three academic sessions.
The Department of Biotechnology offer four years undergraduate programs (B. Sc Honours). Biotechnology is considered to be one of the most important and promising branch of modern science. Biotechnology is not a simple theme; it is a combination of various biological and engineering topics. The course of the department has been designed to cover almost all of the basic and applied biological and engineering subjects related to biotechnology. Some of the important applied courses offered by the department are: Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Fisheries and Marine Biotechnology, Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Cell Technology, Bioprocess Technology, Genetic Engineering etc. The supportive courses are: Animal Science, Agricultural Botany, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Molecular Biology, Genetics etc.
Although, it is a new department in SUST, establishment of modern laboratory facilities of the department are progressing rapidly. Within a shot time the department has developed a common laboratory with primary facilities for the practical works of Animal Sciences, Agricultural Botany, Cytology, Microbiology, Biochemistry etc. In near future, the department has a plan to establish some modern and independent laboratories such as Tissue Culture Laboratory, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering Laboratory, Microbial Biotechnology Laboratory, Animal Biotechnology Laboratory, Plant and Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory, Fish Breeding and Fisheries Biotechnology Laboratory, Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Laboratory, Fermentation Technology Laboratory and so on.
