Yin and yang theory is all about balance. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, balance is essential for healthful living. Not only must there be balance in lifestyle, but also in diet, energy flow throughout the body and environment, meaning the concept of yin and yang theory can be applied to all parts of life.
Yin and yang are two opposing and yet complementary elements that cannot exist without the other. Yin is representative of all things female, dark, restful, earth-bound, cold and material, while yang is representative of all things male, bright, active, heaven-bound, hot and energetic. The two states of yin and yang bring balance to one another and bring healthful balance to your life. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, you will experience illness and ailments of the mind and body when your yin and yang are out of balance.
All Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments are based on the principal that the yin and yang must be brought into balance. Specific pathological issues are related to yin or yang properties and are modified or treated by modifying either the yin or yang in your life. If you have a red face and headache, it is assumed that you have too much yang rising in your body, and need to be cooled and tempered by additional yin. If you have a chest cold, it is assumed that too much yin is in your chest, causing dampness and coldness, and additional yang will be introduced into your life.
The tempering of yin or yang (depending on which is dominating at the time) or the encouragement of more yin or yang is brought about by the usage of herbology (using herbal concoctions which stimulate the appropriate element), acupuncture (directing the energy flow-or chi-to stimulate the appropriate element within) and lifestyle changes which are more yin or yang. For example, working too hard without rest is a lifestyle change that produces too much yang in the system, whereas sleeping too much and not getting exercise is a lifestyle indicative of too much yin and little yang.
Illness is prevented by the proper balance of yin and yang. This idea is the basis of all Traditional Chinese Medical theory.
